Makesound by Jean-Philippe Renoult: the CNC electric panel

At Arts Codés, a Parisian cooperative space, Jean-Philippe Renoult scrutinized the CNC electric panel by recording the low frequencies of the numerical control machine. Headphones highly recommended!

For the 2nd season of his binaural column for Makery, Jean-Philippe Renoult adds his personal touch even more to the sound of the machine. The numerical control machine of Arts Codés, a cooperative space in Pantin near Paris, is seen and heard here from its internal circuits and electronics thanks to the affixing of hydrophones. They act as contact microphones but doped in low frequencies. “I thus develop kicks (the rhythmic base, the “boom”) and bass flows to which the CNC motor itself sometimes replies, he explains. I play CNC with or without suction, or still with suction alone…”

Which allows him to search on the image side for another interpretation of the sound of the machine: “This method creates, among other things, the formation of small dust works that I like to photograph in a 1:1 square format. The sounds themselves are accelerated or slowed down naturally by activating the motor at will.”

A big thank you to Arts Codés and especially its manager Vincent Guimas
